Hydrangea / Hortensie (video)

hydrangea

So far I’ve managed to make a few videos of my tole painting flowers, and for most of them I considered the videos to be enough, without any further explanations. However, I need to have a few explanations regarding Hydrangea, as some variations are possible.

Hydrangea is painted using 1-3 base colors, then painting small white flowers over it. You can choose to have just one base color, but you can also make it more interesting by having two or three similar colors – for example, sapphire, blue violet and dioxazine purple, or medium red rose, burgundy and brown madder, like I did in the tutorial. When painting the small flowers with warm white, you need to work fast, before the base paint gets dry. And you start from the side you consider the light falls on – that’s where the flowers will have more white and less of the base color.

In the picture above there are half hydrangea flowers, painted using 5 different base colors. Following is the tutorial. Enjoy!

  1. Hi Raveca,
It was quite relaxing to watch your video of the hydrangea taking form through your quick and confident brushstrokes. You look very accomplished and I was particularly taken by your painting of the leaves where you incorporated three colours with the same brushstrokes. I hope the actual painting is as relaxing for you. Take care.

    • Hi, John.
Thank you for your nice words. It is indeed very relaxing for me to paint, and I have gained a little more confidence lately.
Looking forward to more blog posts from you, too.
      Take care.
      Raveca
